WIHA Mid Year Announcement

It has been an extremely busy start to the year for Wellington Ice Hockey. From opportunities for adult and youth beginners to get on the ice, to learning the ins and outs of the game as members of the Bear Division, through to playing faster paced hockey in the Fours Division and the growth of Women’s hockey, it is so inspiring to see all the hard work of so many individuals to build the breadth of our hockey community. It brings a smile to my face just thinking of everyone enjoying the great game of Ice Hockey. With our current season wrapping up at the end of June, it’s time to start looking ahead at what's in store for the rest of the year.

Referee Training

One of the big focuses for WIHA this year has been developing our referee program. We recently conducted a workshop with Paul Taillon, Referee-in-Chief for the Auckland Ice Hockey Association with good attendance from both Bear and Fours refs. We will be organising some follow up on-ice and classroom sessions in the coming months, more details to follow. In the meantime, please get in touch if you’d like to participate in referee training. It is free and we’re always happy to have new faces join.

As part of our mission to grow Ice Hockey in Wellington we’ve been steadily growing our stocks of gear that we can lend out to new and returning players. This year we have purchased many helmets, shin pads, gloves and shorts, as well as a full set of adult goalie gear. We are currently working on improving our storage at the rink so that we can continue to expand our collection of gear. This also builds towards our objective of providing open sessions for Wellingtonians to come and try out ice hockey as every week we are now getting more inquiries from interested people.
